2019 Federal Tax Deadlines & Mandatory Masks in Edmonton

2019 Federal Tax Deadlines; Mandatory Masks in the City of Edmonton

The CRA is extending the payment due date for 2019 individual tax returns, and 2019 or 2020 corporation and/or trust returns, as well as for installment payments, to September 30th, 2020. The previous extension for the payment due date was to September 1st, 2020.

The CRA encourages everyone to file their income tax returns as soon as possible, however, penalties and interest (including late filing penalties) will not be charged if payments are made and the return is filed by the September 30th, 2020 deadline.

Interest is being waived on existing tax debts as follows (penalties and interest already assessed on a taxpayer’s account prior to this period are not cancelled):

  • Individual, corporate and trust income tax returns for the period of April 1st, 2020 to September 30th, 2020
  • GST/HST returns for the period of April 1st, 2020 to June 30th, 2020

The Edmonton city council voted 10-3 on Wednesday, July 29th, 2020 to make masks mandatory in all public indoor spaces starting August 1st, 2020, with a $100 fine for non-compliance. Face coverings will be required inside all publicly accessible places, even if they are privately owned. Masks will not be necessary in schools or childcare facilities, hospitals and health care centres, or workspaces where staff are separated from patrons. The Alberta government has decided that a blanket approach to mask rules for the entire province would not work, so it is up to each individual municipality to decide on whether to make mask wearing mandatory. The City of Leduc has released a survey that can be found at this link: https://www.leduc.ca/novel-coronavirus-covid-19/covid-19-face-masks-survey to get the public’s opinion on whether face masks should be mandatory in Leduc. All Leduc Transit and LATS users will be required to wear masks on board beginning August 1st, 2020.
